Cannobio, Cannero Riviera, Trarego-Viggiona
Cannobio is a village of about 5,000 inhabitants close to the Swiss border and is full of vitality, especially during the summer season.
The Lido of Cannobio is a wide beach with deck chairs, beach volleyball field, pedal boat rent, lifeguards service and an area with inflated toys, near a modern bar on two floors offering a spectacular view of the lake. The surrounding waters are crystal clear, so that since a few years ago it is awarded with the prestigious international recognition: the blue flag.
In the warmest period it is also frequented by lovers of water sports such as sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Contacting the Diving Centre, you can enjoy exploring the colorful backdrops of lake shores.
200 meters away you can are access to the tennis court, the football and mini golf grounds, surrounded by a large athletic track.
Beside the seventeenth-century church with the same name you may visit the Ravine of Saint Anne. A bit farther than 3 km from the mouth the waters of the river Cannobino stream down in a magnificent waterfall and have eroded the rocky slope of the mountain, creating a gap over which a pretty bridge passes.
Cannero is a beautiful village with about 1000 inhabitants and is located in a flood plain located between the mountain environment and the shores of the Lake Maggiore.
The Mediterranean climate promotes the cultivation of citrus and olive trees. Citrus Park is open every Sunday from May to August, it includes specimens from the Ligurian coast and in March is home to an event that allows you to taste typical products such as jams, liqueurs, teas and pastries.
In the same period, the spring camellia exhibition also takes place which exhibits rare species of colorful and smelling flowers characteristic of our lake basin.
Many elegant and stately villas with large terraces that overlook the lake are situated along the coast. Some of them were residences of famous people like Churchill, Queen Victoria and Garibaldi, who stayed fascinated by the picturesque landscape that the lake offers.
Very close to the shores of Cannero over two islands there are the ruins of the sixteenth century castles.
Initially owned by the Visconti family, they had become home to the Borromeo family the wealthiest family of the lake, who built the fortress in the fourteenth century to defend in the fighting against the French and the Spanish. Later the fortress Vitaliana would be left to a slow decay, hosting smugglers and counterfeiters.
Unfortunately the current owners don't allow them to be visited by the public but it is due to safety reasons. It is possible, however, to make a cruise around the castles by a catamaran with solar energy.
The legend tells of a ghost ship that appears floating in the vicinity of the castles. It is the boat of the robbers which appears in the mist of the lake, in the grayest and mistiest days.
On the above slopes of the mountains the dense network of footpaths and bridleways of the “Cadorna line” is a destination for hikers. It reaches trenches, forts, hospitals and housing built for the defense against armies coming from Switzerland.
Interesting and not to be missed is the ethnographic museum of the brush at Villa Laura, which exposes the objects used in the life of a time by the inhabitants of the area.
In 2011 the Italian Touring Club has given the two towns the orange flag, recognizing the excellent quality of accommodation.
